You can catch different species with traditional bass lures, but if you really want to see the different varieties of fish in your local waters, an ultralight is the most effective way to do that short of using a cast net. Perch, Bluegill, Walleye, Bass, Crappie, Trout, salt water fish.

An ultra-light rod will be thin and easy to bend, usually intended for casting light lures and fighting small trout and panfish. An extra-heavy rod will be very thick and rigid, meant for fighting large fish like halibut or tuna, and/or casting or jigging very heavy baits.

Ultra-light rods are ideal for smaller fish and light lures, but they can make fighting bigger fish a fun challenge. Light rods are the next step up and have slightly more power. Medium is a universal rod power and also includes popular rods that are medium-light and also medium-heavy.

Most ultralight rods are designed for line weights between 2 and 6 pounds and lure sizes ranging from 1/64 to 1/4 ounce. Selecting a rod with appropriate weight ratings will optimize casting performance and reduce the risk of equipment failure.
